C1x Development
I shared the C1x launch with a number of touring professionals, and got some positive feedback including requests for more detailed stat logging, something that was already on my radar for future updates. That gave me enough motivation to jump into development again after taking a week off, and I'm currently in the process of implementing all of the additional logging required to track new metrics. This is about 80% done -- the next steps will be to finish logging and then start building out displays for all of the new statistics that I can provide users with the additional info from their rounds.
In the process of building out these new features, I've had the usual occurrences of identifying bugs I wasn't aware of and implementing fixes. I also continued to run paid advertisements and do a little bit of marketing alongside DGPT events and gave quite a few more C1x mini discs out. The giveaways I ran around launch were somewhat successful, and at the time of writing I have a little over 400 users and 550,000' of throws logged using the app. It's the disc golf offseason now, so my hope is to take the next few months to perfect the new "deep" mode in C1x for advanced statistics and to launch that around the start of the next season.
Working on Doing, Not Planning
I was noticing more and more that I have an issue with over planning things and under committing to the action of actually doing them, so I made some effort over the past month to correct this. Part of this has been reducing the amount of planning I allow myself to do -- my daily planning has turned into monthly planning, and I'm focusing more on one or two goals as opposed to a variety of small tasks I create for myself. This is also a part of the reason that I jumped back into C1x coding so quickly.
I've also started pursuing side hustles more seriously. This hasn't amounted to much yet, but I do have a couple of potential opportunities on the horizon within startup ecosystems that come up as a result of my attempt to be more proactive. We'll see if they lead anywhere.
Other
Outside of my usual chess lessons and Substack writing, there wasn't a ton else that was new. As part of my actual job, I ended up working a 24-hour shutdown for a client over one weekend and did quite a bit with Michaela over her birthday weekend, including a Star Trek-esque starship simulation experience which I thought was incredibly cool.
My men's basketball league finished up, I updated my resume and put together some career case studies at the recommendation of a mentor, and did much more reading than I had in previous months. I spent some time working through a special relativity course from Columbia University -- I'm about 25% of the way through it, but haven't touched it in the last couple weeks as I've focused on other things. I did find a new favorite coffee shop in Salt Lake City which has become my preferred spot to read and write, and nearly won my first ever poker night.
I'm ultimately trying to reduce the amount of attention and energy that I give to things which don't really matter, and instead focus on one or two things every day which can actually have a positive impact on my life. Easier said than done, but I think it's the difference between actually changing my life and just thinking about it. We'll see what happens.
Onward,
Dylan
